I was surprised to realise that I'd never noticed this hat-trick of gear changes before, so I felt obliged to commission a full and independent public inquiry into how this oversight could have happened. The results revealed the following:

• I no longer listen to this song because I have become slightly sick of it.
• I have become slightly sick of it because it is relentlessly over-used by lazy TV producers who want to denote "the rebelliousness of youth", or indeed just to illustrate any story vaguely connected with age.
• These lazy TV producers are so lazy that as soon as the hackneyed musical illustration has presented itself, it is quickly faded out with a sense of "yes, OK, you've got the idea now".
• The part of song used by these lazy TV producers is of course a short blast of the chorus – never, for example, a section containing a gear change.

All of which is rather a shame, really, because listening to it again I was reminded that despite the gear changes (which Pete Townshend probably introduced "for research purposes") it's actually a very good song.
