If you're going to do a gear change, you might as well hold your head up high and proudly draw attention to it, like The Jam do. The listener gets a five-second warning (enough time to duck behind the sofa) as the guitar works its way upwards triumphantly to the big release. It's kind of inappropriate that they should choose to do this twice, in fact, though I've only included one example in this clip in the middle of a song called "Going Underground".

Apparently this song was rewritten by some tosser from Virgin Radio for the 2002 football World Cup as "Go England". I say "apparently" because I did all I could to avoid anything to do with the World Cup, and thankfully managed to avoid this. But my heart is warmed by the thought of tens of thousands of one-dimensional blokes neanderthally chanting a massive truck driver's gear change in a stadium somewhere in South Korea.
