Culprit The Flaming Lips
Title Do You Realize??
Year 2002
Written by Wayne Coyne, Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins

After this savage upturn the Flaming Lips do quickly see the error of their ways and go back down to the original key, but it's still such an extraordinary surprise that it counts as a gear change, in my ears anyway. Taken from the album Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, this is actually a great song, so I won't be too hard on them. However, I do have tickets to see their Hammersmith Apollo gig on 3 November, so I will be listening carefully and preparing to punch the air in anger and amusement if they replicate this live.

Update (4 November 2003): they did indeed perform this, with gusto. It was the last song of the set before the encore, and a distinct cheer broke out at the moment of modulation. A thoroughly enjoyable evening, in fact – especially the abundance of big wobbly balloons and the bemusingly accurate cover of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". (The Flaming Lips are going to be doing a special New Year's Eve gig with the White Stripes in Chicago, apparently.)
