As Dominic Pedler points out in his "Muso's introduction" article, this isn't a typical case of a key change being employed towards the end of the song purely to stretch it out for a few more choruses. Instead, it unusually forms the start of the guitar solo. But for me that doesn't make it any less traumatic, and I find its total lack of subtlety rather startling. It's quite a sleepy song, so maybe the gear change was used to make sure George would definitely be awake when it was his turn to play.
