This is not one of my favourite Steely Dan songs, but it's still quite likeable. They do something weird in the transition from verse to chorus each time; but it's not a gratuitous shift since it all comes out in the wash, so to speak. However, this bit at the end is dreadful. They repeat the last line of the chorus for good measure, before belting up a key to a rousing finale. A truly lazy stunt, given the intricacy of their other work around this time.

At the time of writing (November 2003), "The Dan" have recently finished a US tour to promote their "Everything Must Go" album (not to be confused with the Manic Street Preachers' album of the same name…). I have to say that I'm not as keen on their stuff since they re-formed a bit too much like lightweight soul compared to their inspired and elaborate, ahem, "jazz-rock" of the 1970s. Still, if they were exactly the same that'd be a bit sad, and they do a good job of keeping their extensive website going (including an amusing page called "they used to be great").
