TV talent shows delight in showcasing gear changes, and "A Moment Like This" has exceptional TV talent show pedigree. In 2002 it was the first single to emerge from the then-new American Idol series, as sung by Kelly Clarkson (of "Because Of You" fame). And yes, Kelly Clarkson's version also features a gear change. But it's nothing in comparison to the Leona Lewis treatment, for which we have to thank the 2006 UK series of The X-Factor – which led to her gaining the much-coveted Christmas number 1 spot. Given that Leona Lewis's vocal skills have been compared on a number of occasions to Whitney Houston, it's perhaps no surprise that this is so reminiscent of the stop-then-smack-you-in-the-face technique used on the ever-popular "I Will Always Love You". It's enough to make you want to chuck your TV set out the window in a rock-'n'-roll tantrum.

Due to this song's originality and sheer brilliance – not because the British public are a bunch of TV-controlled sheep – it became the world's fastest-downloaded track when released in December 2006 as an Internet download. Or something like that.
