With the horn build-up which precedes it, this truck driver's gear change can be accused of being "bold as brass". Indeed, it's arguably just another aspect of what many regard as a shamelessly commercial repackaging of the song, which Bowie originally wrote for Iggy Pop's Lust for Life album in 1977. The 1984 version removed the references to death by drug use which opened Iggy Pop's version, added Tina Turner as a vocalist, and promptly failed to live up to chart-performance expectations.
The message is clear: people want to listen to songs about heroin, not brass-based key changes.
