Culprit Conway Twitty
Title I'd Love To Lay You Down
Year 1980
Written by Fred MacRae
Submitted by Ron

Suggestive "adult" lyrics like these contributed a lot to Conway Twitty's enduring popularity. But the idea is taken to another level here as the lyrical content is reflected in a double downwards gear change. Rather unusual, and rather refreshing. The vocals' gradual descent reminds me of other classic "going down" moments like Garth Brooks' "Friends In Low Places", and Elvis Presley's "Way Down".

Harold Lloyd Jenkins' rather curious-sounding pseudonym was formed from the names of two towns: Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas. If he'd come from a bit further east he might have ended up as Buffalo Springfield. Makes you think, doesn't it?
