Here's a good example of a truck driver's gear change reflecting the ideas expressed in the song: in this case Cher wishes that she could "reach for the stars", and the listener is propelled upwards, as if trying to help her out. Which I suppose means that the shift isn't totally gratuitous, but it's still grotesque. Personally, if I could turn back time I would have stopped this song before it got out of hand. And I would have found a way to prevent her from making that awful video where she was straddling an enormous gun on some battleship.
