I've always enjoyed the way that Barry Manilow sings "I Write The Songs", when in fact he doesn't. When Bruce Johnson flogged him this, Barry would have had every right to change it to "You Write The Astonishing Gear Changes". Or indeed, judging by the middle eight, "You Write The Songs The Beatles Decided Against Writing".
As the orchestra swoops up to the first key shift with the words "a worldwide symphony" I think it's fair to accuse him of "showboating", or perhaps "grandstanding". But he's on a roll, as that slow, heavy drumming which he employed to such effect on "Mandy" pushes steadily onwards...
