Culprit Ash
Title Shining Light
Year 2001
Written by Tim Wheeler
Submitted by Siegfried Baboon

I've never really had much time for Ash, finding them rather bland and unremarkable, so I was rather taken aback by the sinister impression which this song made on me the first time I heard it.

It's bad enough that the guitar starts out sounding like the whining noise off that song by James (the name of which I can't be bothered to dredge out of either my memory or Google). Then the whole song just descends into a kind of artless mush which seems to be going nowhere. But gradually the hairs on the back of your neck begin to rise as it dawns on you that all this musical treading-water is a result of the band sheepishly trying to avoid the onset of a shameless truck driver's gear change, which painfully heralds the return of the vocals.

Utterly appalling – but at least now I can actually name one of Ash's songs.
